Proclaimers, Kings Of Leon Rule U.K. Charts

Comments

In an unchanged top three on the new U.K. singles chart, Scottish brothers the Proclaimers' update of their own "(I'm Gonna Be) 500 Miles" (EMI), featuring comic characters Brian Potter and Andy Pipkin, started a third week at No. 1. Meanwhile, Kings Of Leon achieved their first U.K. chart-topping album as "Because of the Times" (Hand Me Down/Sony BMG) entered at the top.

The Proclaimers' Comic Relief fundraiser held top spot ahead of Avil Lavigne's "Girlfriend" (Arista) and "The Sweet Escape" (Interscope) by Gwen Stefani featuring Akon at Nos. 2 and 3 respectively. The Fray's resilient "How To Save a Life" (Epic) moves back 5-4 in its 12th chart week, swapping places with "Destination Calabria" (Data) by Alex Gaudio featuring Crystal Waters.

The singles chart's highest new entry was "Stop Me," a cover of "Stop Me if You Think You've Heard This One Before" from the Smiths' 1987 album "Strangeways Here We Come." The new version, on Columbia, is by producer-turned-artist Mark Ronson featuring Melbourne, Australia-born singer Daniel Merriweather. In a top 10 remarkably dominated by duets and featured vocalists, "Give It to Me" (Interscope) by Timbaland featuring Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake came in at No. 8 and "Beautiful Liar" (Columbia) by Beyonce & Shakira was new at No. 10.

Arctic Monkeys' "Brianstorm" (Domino) started at No. 11 while My Chemical Romance's "I Don't Love You" (Reprise) vaulted 43-13 in the week it became available as a physical single. Ciara's "Like a Boy" (LaFace) rose 28-16, chart veterans Erasure returned at No. 21 with "I Could Fall in Love With You" (Mute) and Natasha Bedingfield's "I Wanna Have Your Babies" (Phonogenic/Sony BMG) came in at No. 25.

Kings Of Leon's chart-topping start followed consecutive No. 3 peaks in the U.K. for their first two albums, 2003's "Youth and Young Manhood" and 2005's "Aha Shake Heartbreak." The new album hit top spot ahead of north of England rock band Maximo Park's sophomore set "Our Earthly Pleasures" (Warp), which came in at No. 2. Last week's No. 1, Take That's "Beautiful World" (Polydor), fell to No. 3, while Timbaland's "Shock Value" debuted at No. 10.

"The Best of the Proclaimers," released by EMI in the wake of the Reid brothers' singles chart prominence, came in at No. 5. The Proclaimers recently announced a new deal with Universal's W14 label, and will start recording a new studio album in May at Rockfield Studios with producer Steve Evans, for September release ahead of a U.K. tour.

On Billboard's composite European sales charts, Furtado's "Loose" (Mosley/Geffen) leads European Top 100 Albums survey for a fourth consecutive week and sixth overall. Timberlake's "What Goes Around ... Comes Around" (Jive) is in a second week atop Eurochart Hot 100 Singles.
