Veteran roots music artists Buddy Miller and John Prine took the top honors at the Americana Music Association's fourth annual Americana Honors & Awards, held Sept. 9 at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium.
Prine was named artist of the year and Miller took home the prize for album of the year for his "Universal United House of Prayer." Other winners included instrumentalist of the year Sonny Landreth and new/emerging artist winner Mary Gauthier. The song of the year award went to the late Mark Heard for "Worry Too Much," recorded by Miller.
As previously reported, lifetime achievement awards were given to Marty Stuart in the performer category and Guy Clark in the songwriter category. Rounder Records founders Ken Irwin, Marian Leighton and Bill Nowlin were presented the Jack Emerson Lifetime Achievement Award in the executive category.
Judy Collins was the recipient of the First Amendment Center/AMA Spirit of Americana Free Speech Award and John Hartford was posthumously honored with the AMA's President's Award.
The show was hosted by Jim Lauderdale and included appearances by nominees Alison Brown, Hayes Carll, the Duhks, Steve Earle, Gauthier, Tom Gillam, Tift Merritt, Emmylou Harris and Arlo Guthrie. Other artists appearing on the show included Solomon Burke, Shawn Camp, Elizabeth Cook, Radney Foster, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Robert Earl Keen, Raul Malo, Allison Moorer, Mindy Smith, Todd Snider and Billy Bob Thornton.
The show's finale, led by Guthrie, was a group performance of the Steve Goodman-penned "City of New Orleans," a tribute to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
The two-hour show will be telecast nationally Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Great American Country (GAC). It aired live on XM Satellite Radio.
