The Mean Fiddler Organisation has canceled the Phoenix Festival, which was to have taken place July 16-19 in Long Marston, England, because of poor ticket sales. Billboard Bulletin reports that in a statement, the organizer blames the overcrowded festival calendar and the World Cup. Prodigy, Ocean Colour Scene, and a re-formed New Order were set to headline the fest, which was to have featured 300 acts.
The Phoenix is the third British festival to be canceled during the usually lucrative summer concert season. Universe '98, which was to take place in May and feature Beck, Spiritualized, and Roni Size/Reprazent, among others, fell prey to low ticket sales, as did the Brixton Double-Header dance night devised as its replacement.
