Pavarotti, Jones Among Kennedy Center Honorees

Tenor Luciano Pavarotti and multi-faceted music impresario Quincy Jones are among the five individuals selected to receive the 2001 honors from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Actress Julie Andrews, actor Jack Nicholson, and pianist Van Cliburn will also be honored during a Dec. 2 ceremony at the center's Opera House in Washington, D.C.

In a statement, Kennedy Center Chairman James A. Johnson described Jones as "a musician who has had a spectacular influence on all facets of American popular music for more than 50 years," and Pavarotti as "a singer whose unique voice has attracted new fans to opera in the United States and throughout the world."

President and first lady Laura Bush are due to attend the gala salute to the honorees, which will be taped for broadcast later in December on CBS. Secretary of State Colin Powell will host a formal dinner the night before the performance.

The Kennedy Center will celebrate its own 30th anniversary on Sunday (Sept. 9) with its Open House Arts Festival. The six-hour event will feature fireworks, a giant birthday cake, and performances by a variety of groups, including the National Symphony Orchestra.
