When it came down to deciding whether or not to join Mary Chapin Carpenter, Shawn Colvin and Dar Williams on this fall's Songwriter tour, Patty Griffin tells Billboard.com there was very little hesitation. "I really wanted to have this fall [season] off because I've been kind of working pretty hard lately, but yeah, I said yes right away," says Griffin. "It seemed like a fun thing to do, just to hang out together on stage, and play songs to each other."
This outing, which begins Sept. 29 in Pittsburgh, finds the four performers sharing the stage and harmonizing songs with intimate and spontaneous results.
Griffin is also gearing up for the Oct. 7 release on ATO of the concert CD/DVD "A Kiss in Time," a project she admits did not initially appeal to her. "Originally, I wasn't going to do anything," Griffin says. "The label was concerned that something come out this year so they came up with the idea of releasing this live performance from Nashville's Ryman Auditorium [taped in January].
"It was a pretty amazing night," she continues. "I think it was one of the best audiences I've ever performed for, by far. They were really, really intensely attentive and responsive. And the Ryman Auditorium, the old Grand Ole Opry, is such a beautiful place. [But] I can't think of one live album that I've really been in love with. So, I'm not really a fan of live records and I've never really wanted to do one, but I agreed to put out the performance if I could put out this DVD, which is sort of a scrapbook of the 1000 Kisses tour last year."
As for new studio material to follow-up her 2001 Grammy-nominated album "1000 Kisses," Griffin has been finishing up her still untitled follow-up, due next spring. Austin, Texas-based singer/songwriter Craig Ross is producing the project, which Griffin said is "a little more arranged and thought out" with "more richness and depth" than her previous disc.
Despite her reservations, Griffin says she'll probably play some new material on the Songwriter tour. "I think I am going to have to, because it is too hard to keep it under wraps," she admits. "It is a little rough to play it because people tape the shows and I don't really care if they tape the songs for free. That is not the point. I don't like to kill the surprise but on the other hand, I'm more into my new material. You always are into the stuff that you just wrote so I will probably end up playing stuff from the new record."
