Harris is best known as the songwriter of "Don't Know Why," the touchstone track on Jones' 2002 debut, "Come Away With Me" (Blue Note). The composition won the song of the year Grammy for Harris plus record of the year and best female vocal performance of the year honors for Jones. "Come Away With Me," which featured three more Harris songs and one Harris/Jones co-write, won Grammys for album of the year and best pop vocal album.
The title cut of "While the Music Lasts" is among the songs to which Jones contributes her distinctive vocal and piano skills. Frisell, the experimental guitarist Harris has referred to as an idol, guests on two tracks. Parks, best known for his collaborations with Brian Wilson, arranged strings for four songs, one of which features him on accordion.
Harris and the Ferdinandos -- guitarist Tony Scherr, bassist Tim Luntzel and drummer Dan Rieser -- recorded the set in November in New York. The singer/songwriter and Scherr served as co-producers on "While the Music Lasts," which was engineered and mixed by Terry Manning (Led Zeppelin, Big Star).
The new album is the follow-up to 2003's "The Secret Sun," which was released on the Verve-affiliated Blue Thumb imprint. That set featured the single "All My Life," which is available for free download on Harris's official Web site, as well as "What Makes You," featuring Jones.
