Indie rock stalwart Superchunk is wrapping up work on its eighth studio album. Planned for a Sept. 18 release through the group's self-run Merge Records label, the disc has yet to be titled. Produced by Brian Paulson (Wilco, Son Volt), the set features guest spots from members of Japancakes, the White Lights, and the Rock*A*Teens.
"We recorded the record over a blurry two weeks in Atlanta at ZeroReturn studios, a fabulous facility built and operated by a couple of the Man...Or Astroman? guys," frontman Mac McCaughan tells Billboard.com. "We're now finishing up mixing outside Chapel Hill, N.C., at Brian Paulson's Uwharrie Ridge Road Studios."
"If all goes well, it will probably be preceded by a single," he continues. "We don't have an album title yet, though we've come up with plenty of stupid ideas." The new album will be the the follow-up to 1999's "Come Pick Me Up."
McCaughan confirms the following song titles: "Late-Century Dream," "Out on the Wing," "What Do You Look Forward To," "Drool Collection," and "Down Rainy Streets." Two additional songs set for inclusion are "Act Surprised" and "Phone Sex." Demos of both can be found on Merge's official Web site.
Meanwhile, McCaughan's side project Portastatic will release the album "Looking for Leonard" Tuesday (May 22) through Merge. Comprised of 14 McCaughan originals recorded with Paulson, the disc serves as the score to the movie of the same name from Canadian filmmakers Matt Bissonette and Steven Clark.
McCaughan also plans to collaborate with Guided By Voices frontman Robert Pollard on an album for Pollard's Fading Captain imprint. No title or release date has been announced for the joint effort. "I'd guess it'll come out next year, but I hope to have my part of the record -- the music -- done this summer," McCaughan says. "Then I'll pass it off to Bob to sing on."
