Etta James, Johnny Mathis, Glenn Miller, Tito Puente, and Simon & Garfunkel have been chosen by the Recording Academy as the recipients of its 2003 Lifetime Achievement Awards. The formal presentation of the honors will be made Feb. 22 at the Nominee Banquet in New York. Highlights of the ceremony will be shown during the next night's 45th annual Grammy Awards CBS telecast from the city's Madison Square Garden.

In addition to the Lifetime Achievement honors, the Academy has named late musicologist Alan Lomax and the New York Philharmonic, the oldest symphony orchestra in the U.S., as recipients of its Trustees Awards. Anna Lomax Chairetakis plans to accept the award on behalf of her father.

The Lifetime Achievement Award honors lifelong artistic contributions to the recording medium, while the Trustees Award recognizes outstanding contributions to the industry in a non-performing capacity.

"The recipients of these awards are a diverse group of inspired creators who have contributed some of the most distinctive and seminal recordings of the past century," Recording Academy board of trustees chairman Garth Fundis said in a statement. "From the creation of timeless recordings and the preservation of our nation's rich musical history, to furthering music education for students of all ages, their outstanding achievements leave a timeless legacy that inspire generations of fans and artists alike. Their work exemplifies the highest creative and technical standards by which we all measure our own personal and professional contributions."

As previously reported, next year's ceremony marks the first time the Grammys have been held in New York since 1998.
