MTV Taps Metallica As Next 'Icon'

Metallica will follow in the footsteps of Janet Jackson and Aerosmith as honorees of MTV's performance tribute show mtvICON, with the third annual event set to premiere May 6. The show will tape before a live audience three days earlier in Los Angeles, with performances paying respects to the veteran hard rock act.

The full list of performers has yet to be announced, but Metallica itself will play a set at the show's climax, marking the group's debut TV appearance with new bassist Rob Trujillo, who recently joined as a replacement for Jason Newsted.

Metallica is gearing up for the release of a new studio album, "St. Anger," due June 10 from Elektra. The album will feature the work of Trujillo, a veteran of Suicidal Tendencies and Ozzy Osbourne's band. Metallica will support the album on the Summer Sanitarium Tour with Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit, set to kick off July 4 in Pontiac, Mich.

Metallica's last album, the live disc "S&M," debuted at No. 2 on The Billboard 200 in December 1999 and has sold 2.57 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
