Mr. Children Tops First MTV Japan Video Awards

Jay-Z, Backstreet Boys, Oasis and a slew of Japanese acts including Rip Slyme were among the winners at the inaugural MTV Video Music Awards Japan '02, held Friday in Tokyo. Japanese pop/rock group Mr. Children, signed to Toy's Factory, won the award for best video of the year for "Kimi ga Suki (I Like You)."

Rip Slyme (Warner Music Japan) walked away with awards for best new artist and best hip-hop/rap act, while Ken Hirai (Defstar Records/Sony Music Entertainment Japan) and Ayumi Hamasaki (Avex) received the awards for best male and female, respectively.

Hosted by Japanese comedic duo London Boots, the event -- held at the Tokyo International Forum before an audience of 2,000 -- featured performances by Boyz II Men, Sheryl Crow, Jay-Z, Joe, Nickelback, and Oasis, along with Mr. Children, Rip Slyme, Hirai, Kamasaki, Chemistry, and Tamio Okuda.

Guitarist Jimmy Page made a surprise appearance to accept the Legend Award. Oasis won the best live-performance award after appearing with four other acts at the MTV Super Dry Live concert on Thursday in Tokyo.

Winners were decided by votes from MTV Japan viewers and a committee of staffers and industry experts. For the full list, visit the awards' official Web site.
