Indie rock "super-group" Monsters of Folk -- consisting of Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis, alongside M. Ward and My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James -- is hitting the road this fall, stopping at U.S. and Canadian theatres before heading over to Europe. The tour kicks off October 13 in Vancouver and runs through November. The quartet will switch instruments throughout the night and presumably trade off lead and backing vocal duties. Included in the tour are two nights in New York City and a Halloween gig in Jim James's hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.

While this tour is in support of the forthcoming, eponymous record (due Sept. 22 on Shangri-La Music), the project was actually born out of a tour they did in 2004. The gigs affectionately became referred to by the crew and musicians as the "Monsters of Folk."

Over the last two years, the four have been getting together and recording when they weren't committed to their own individual projects. "We didn't mail demos back and forth or anything like that; we just decided to wing it and play each others songs, talk about them and discuss them," James told Billboard.com. "We wanted to make it so it was only the four us playing anything you hear on the record. And it was fun for us to play instruments we normally don't play."

Although each artist has seen success over the last few years with their own bands, James said that fact never really factored into getting together. "It was just a real egoless thing," he says. "We laugh a lot together; I think that's the sign of a good project. I feel like that's how it is in My Morning Jacket and that's how it's been in the Monsters of Folk."

Throughout the tour, Monsters of Folk are working with music-based philanthropic group Air Traffic Control to donate $1 from every ticket sold to local non-profit groups.
