Moby, Liberty X Overtake U.K. Charts

Comments

Moby scored an instant U.K. No. 1 with his new Mute album "18" yesterday (May 19), amid a new top-10 that also welcomed sets by Queen and Van Morrison. On the U.K. singles chart, there was a triumph over adversity for Liberty X, the group formed from losing finalists on the TV talent series "Popstars."

Previously known as Liberty until it lost a court challenge from an earlier British group of the same name, the V2 act had scored a No. 5 hit last October with "Thinkin' It Over' and reached No. 14 in December with "Doin' It." But the group now has its first chart-topper with "Just A Little," replacing Ronan Keating's "If Tomorrow Never Comes" (Polydor).

Enrique Iglesias, in London last week for live shows at the Royal Albert Hall, entered the singles chart at No. 3 with "Escape" (Interscope), while "What's Luv" by Fat Joe featuring Ashanti (Atlantic/East West) arrived at No. 4 and Pink's "Don't Let Me Get Me" (Arista) bowed at No. 6. In the lead-up to this coming weekend's Eurovision Song Contest in Estonia, the U.K. entry "Come Back" by Jessica Garlick (Columbia) debuted at No. 13.

As Moby hit the top of the album survey, last week's No. 1, Doves' "The Last Broadcast" (Heavenly/EMI) crashed to No. 9. Queen's "Greatest Hits I II & III' (Parlophone), timed to coincide with the opening at London's Dominion Theatre of the Queen musical "We Will Rock You," came in at No. 2. Morrison's "Down the Road," which marks his return to Polydor after a spell with Virgin, opened at No. 6.

Celine Dion's "A New Day Has Come" (Epic) is in its seventh week at No. 1 on Music & Media's European Top 100 Albums chart. Tom Waits manages the unique achievement of two simultaneous top-10 entries, as his Anti/Epitaph releases "Alice" and "Blood Money" debut at No. 7 and No. 8, respectively. Atop Eurochart Hot 100 Singles, it's now 12 straight weeks for Shakira's "Whenever Wherever" (Epic).
