According to Germany's Bild am Sonntag newspaper, Pilatus was alone when he died in a Frankfurt hotel room, where he had been consuming alcohol and pills. An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death.
Pilatus and his Milli Vanilli partner, Fabrice Morvan, were awarded the best new artist Grammy in 1989 for their debut set, "Girl You Know It's True"; the Arista album, which topped the Billboard 200 for eight weeks, contained such hits as the title track and "Blame It On The Rain." Yet the pair were stripped of the honor a year later when it was revealed that they had lip-synched to the record, which was made by uncredited studio musicians.
Pilatus had been in Germany since the fall undergoing a drug rehabilitation program, the newspaper quoted Milli Vanilli producer Frank Farian as saying.
