Mike And The Mechanics Vocalist Paul Young Dies

Comments

British vocalist Paul Young, who sang with Mike And The Mechanics and Sad Cafè, died today (July 17) of a heart attack in Cheshire, U.K, according to published reports in the U.K. He was 53.

Young was the voice of Sad Cafè's 1979 single "Run Home Girl," which hit No. 71 on the Billboard pop singles chart. In 1985, he teamed with Genesis' Mike Rutherford and Squeeze's Paul Carrack as Mike And The Mechanics. The new group launched to international stardom with singles such as "All I Need Is A Miracle," which hit No. 5 in the U.S., and "Living Years," which hit No. 1 in 1989.

Young sang on the most recent Mike And The Mechanics album, a self-titled set issued by Virgin U.K. in 1999.

"He had a fantastic voice, one of the best rock voices of his generation," Rutherford said in a statement. "And aside from his musical talent he had such an infectious enthusiasm for the business. Paul loved performing, we all thought he would be singing in 50 years time. This is a terrible loss."
