McFerrin Goes 'Beyond Words'

Comments

"Beyond Words," the 12th album from vocal innovator Bobby McFerrin, is set for a March 12 on Blue Note/Angel. It's the first set to be released in collaboration between jazz label Blue Note and classical imprint Angel, which signed McFerrin early last year under the Jazz & Classics umbrella of Capitol Records.

Produced by Linda Goldstein and Gil Goldstein, the album continues McFerrin's unique explorations into vocal contortions, mixing musical styles from around the world into compositions featuring vocal percussion and McFerrin's four-octave singing range.

His son Taylor shows up on "Taylor Made," exhibiting a rhythmic vocal style similar to his father's, but bringing a younger approach to the drum-and-bass-inspired track. Jazz pianist Chick Corea also is part of McFerrin's backing band on many tracks, including his own composition "Windows," the only song of the album's 16 tracks not penned by McFerrin. Other contributing musicians include Richard Bona, Omar Hakim, and Cyro Baptista.

McFerrin, winner of 10 Grammy awards, last experienced chart success with his 1997 album "Circle Songs," which peaked at No. 4 on The Billboard Classical 50. His biggest hit was 1988's "Simple Pleasures" album, which hit No. 5 on The Billboard 200 on the strength of the No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 single "Don't Worry, Be Happy."
