Veteran roots singer Delbert McClinton will release a new album, "Room to Breathe," Sept. 24 on New West Records. McClinton co-produced the album with Gary Nicholson, with whom the artist has collaborated with for much of the '90s. Such artists as Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Steve Earle, and Emmylou Harris make guest appearances.
For the 12-song set, McClinton conspired with a number of songwriters, including Benmont Tench (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers) and Al Anderson (NRBQ), as well as country regulars Gary Nicholson, Tom Faulkner, Billy Lawson, and Fred Knobloch. Backing McClinton is fiddle and pedal steel player James Pennebaker and rhythm guitarist Bill Campbell.
While a single has not yet been chosen, McClinton enlisted an all-star cast for "Lone Star Blues," which features a chorus sung by Ely, Gilmore, Earle, and Harris, as well as Butch Hancock, Rodney Crowell, Heather Waters, Jessi Alexander, Billy Joe Shaver, Ray Benson, Marcia Ball, and Kimmie Rhodes. Elsewhere, a full string section embellishes a pair of songs, "Everything I Know About the Blues (I Learned from You)" and "I Don't Wanna Love You Anymore."
McClinton will promote the album with an appearance at the fourth annual Dare to Dream 2002 -- A Concert for Hope, to be held July 26-27 at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Conn. Michelle Branch, Uncle Kracker, Darren Hayes, Eddie Money, Jars Of Clay, and Sara Evans are among some of the artists also slated to appear at the event, highlights of which will be broadcast Sept. 7 on NBC. Tickets are available via Tickets.com, with proceeds benefiting the Bendheim Cancer Center at Greenwich Hospital.
Come January, McClinton will take his act to the seas for the ninth time, via a week-long cruise that will depart from Tampa, Fla. Last year's guests included Marcia Ball, the Tommy Castro Band, the Derailers, the Del McCoury Band, Bonnie Bramlett, Stephen Bruton, Al Anderson, Jeffery Steel, and Wayne Toups
McClinton's last New West release, "Nothing Personal," debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Blues Albums chart last March, and has since sold 146,000 units in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. It is No. 4 in its 70th week on the chart this week.
