Veteran Southern rock act the Marshall Tucker Band will headline a May 1 concert/rally in support of the U.S. military in Spartanburg, S.C. Set for the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium, Rally for the Troops will be presented by Gallagher's Army, the name given to listeners and supporters of syndicated conservative talk show host Mike Gallagher. Newcomer country artist Ty Nelson will also perform on the bill.

The patriotic gathering is also being positioned as an anti-Dixie Chicks rally, and is scheduled on the day that country trio will open its North American tour with a sold out show at the Bi Lo Center in nearby Greenville, S.C. A vocal supporter of U.S. President George W. Bush and the military, Gallagher and his listeners have been unabashed in their displeasure over Chicks singer Natalie Maines' recent comments during a London concert, where she disavowed the group's shared lineage with the Texas-born politician.
Although Maines later apologized for the remark, the backlash has been significant, with falling sales of the group's Monument/Sony album "Home" and airplay of Dixie Chicks music banned at many U.S. country radio stations. As previously reported, in the first full week following the comment, U.S. sales of the album fell 42% to 72,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
"If all goes well, we might just shadow the Dixie Chicks in cities all over the country with these proud displays of patriotism and support of our President and the military," it says elsewhere on Gallagher's site. Other Gallageher's Armys events already scheduled in North Carolina, Denver, and Colorado Springs, Colo., will collect food and items to benefit military families.
Tickets to the Marshall Tucker-headlined Rally for the Troops will be made available Wednesday (April 1) at 10 a.m. ET via an Internet pre-sale through Ticketmaster.com. General sale of tickets to the show will begin Friday at 10 a.m. ET. Proceeds will benefit military families.
The Marshall Tucker Band hopes to release a live album, "Stompin' Room Only," in the near future, according to its official Web site. The recordings feature the group's original lineup captured in 1975 in London and Manchester, England during its only European tour, and in Milwaukee. Originally slated for release in 1976, the once-thought-lost album was due out last summer through the band's own Ramblin' Records, but has been delayed as the label seeks distribution.
