Marsalis Leads Playboy Jazz Lineup

Comments

Wynton Marsalis leads the star-studded lineup for the 24th annual Playboy Jazz Festival, to be held June 15-16 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. On the first day of the event, Marsalis will perform alongside Latin jazz veteran Arturo Sandoval, legendary blues vocalist Etta James, and saxophonist Joe Lovano, who will offer a salute to the late Italian opera star Enrico Caruso.

Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove, and Michael Brecker will survey Miles Davis and John Coltrane compositions under the moniker Directions In Music, while vocalist Patti Austin and the Count Basie Orchestra will perform songs popularized by the late Ella Fitzgerald. Late bass great Charles Mingus will be celebrated with a performance by the Mingus Big Band.

Other artists on the bill include guitarists Keb' Mo' and Lee Ritenour, vocalist Nnenna Freelon, bassist Marcus Miller, bandleader Karl Denson, salsa band Maraca, Pete Fountain and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and trumpeter Chris Botti.

Longtime host Bill Cosby will lead the Cos of Good Music VII all-stars, featuring Ernie Andrews, Monty Alexander, Dwayne Burno, Ndugu Chancler, Byron Stripling, and Craig Handy.
