Mariah Wins Big At Vibe Awards

Comments

Adding another chapter to her 2005 comeback story, Mariah Carey walked away the big winner at Saturday's third annual Vibe Awards. Carey netted artist of the year, album of the year ("The Emancipation of Mimi"), R&B voice of the year and best R&B song ("We Belong Together") at the event, which will be broadcast tomorrow on UPN.

Ciara, who led the field with five nominations, took home the coolest collabo award for "Oh" featuring Ludacris. Additional winners included Kanye West (best rapper), newcomers Keyshia Cole and Young Jeezy (tying for the Next award) and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley (the Boomshot award for "Welcome to Jamrock"). Among the evening's performers were Ciara, Cole, Chris Brown, Pharrell, David Banner and Paul Wall.

VLegend Award honoree Mary J. Blige created a stir during her acceptance speech. After reading through a roll call of key people behind her professional and personal success, the singer noted that while Vibe "has given me great covers" over the years, "this last cover is very insulting. No disrespect, [to editor-in-chief] Mimi [Valdes], but we need to sit down and talk." Blige charged the magazine "shaved my ears back and pushed back my forehead." There was no immediate comment from Valdes and the Vibe editorial staff.

Blige's negative comments were the evening's only hitch. Thanks to heavy security at the Sony Studios taping site, there was no repeat of the melee that marred last year's awards in Los Angeles. That fracas occurred after a man stepped up to special honoree Dr. Dre and slapped him. The assailant was then allegedly stabbed by G-Unit member Young Buck.
