Madonna's last U.K. No. 1 was "Frozen" exactly two years ago. "American Pie" is her 49th U.K. top-10 single and outdoes McLean's original, which spent three weeks at No. 2 in March 1972. McLean's version charted again in October 1991, reaching No. 12.
Last week's singles chart featured six new entries in the top seven; this week's has seven in the top-10, with 'N Sync's "Bye Bye Bye" (Jive) becoming the group's highest-charting U.K. hit at No. 3.
Vengaboys scored their sixth U.K. top-5 hit within 16 months, as "Shalala Lala" (Positiva)
debuts at No. 5. Lene Marlin, who won four awards at the Spellemannprisen ceremony in her native Norway on Feb. 25, saw "Sitting Down Here" (Virgin) open her U.K. account at No. 6.
1st Avenue/Mercury Britsoul trio Honeyz made it five top-10 hits from five releases, as "Won't Take It Lying Down," bows at No. 7. "Satisfy You," by Puff Daddy featuring R. Kelly (Puff Daddy/Arista), debuted at No. 8, while Mariah Carey's "Thank God I Found You" featuring Joe and 98 Degrees (Columbia) opened at No. 10.
Over on the U.K. album chart, Oasis made its expected arrival at No. 1 with "Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants" (Big Brother), while Smashing Pumpkins' "MACHINA / the machines of God" (Hut/Virgin) opened at No. 7, two places lower than its 1998 set "Adore."
Eels entered at No. 8 with "Daisies Of The Galaxy" (DreamWorks), while Steely Dan's "Two Against Nature" (Giant/RCA) came in at No. 11, a position the group has bettered only once in the U.K., when "Aja" reached No. 5 in 1977.
"Sex Bomb" (Gut/V2) by Tom Jones with Mousse T moves to No. 1 on Music & Media's Eurochart Hot 100 Singles chart for the March 11 issue. That track, from his IFPI Platinum Award-winning "Reload" album is a smash throughout Europe, but it's not a single in the U.K., where Jones' version of "Mama Told Me Not To Come" with fellow Welshmen Stereophonics is his new release.
Santana's "Supernatural" (Arista) continues its run at No. 1 on the European Top 100 Albums chart.
