Rocker Lenny Kravitz, a New York native, has been recognized for his achievements via one of France's most prestigious cultural awards. The "Are You Gonna Go My Way" singer was named Officer of the Order of Arts by culture minister Frederic Mitterrand, the latest in a group of internationally acclaimed artists to enter the ranks.

The genre-blending musician was "particularly touched" to be recognized in France, according to The Associated Press. "In my early days, it didn't work at all in the United States but that night triggered everything, as if all the good energy was concentrated here."

Kravitz enjoyed his first big break in playing Rennes' Trans Musicales festival in 1989. Since then, he's recorded in France and has often enjoyed greater commercial success there than in his native America.

His 2000 compilation, "Greatest Hits," peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart, a career best in America.

Past inductees in the club include Bob Dylan, Martin Scorsese, and George Clooney.
