Lady GaGa Takes Top Spot On U.K. Singles Chart

by Andre Paine, London  |   March 23, 2009 2:30 EDT
Album releases aimed squarely at yesterday's Mothers' Day had a big impact on the new U.K. sales chart. Irish pop vocalist Ronan Keating's covers set "Songs For My Mother" (Polydor/Universal) entered at No. 1, while on the separate compilation album listing, "101 Housework Songs" (Virgin/EMI) climbed 5-1 and "To Mum, Love Motown" (Motown/Universal) 10-2.

The new artist album chart also saw "The Annie Lennox Collection" (RCA/Sony BMG) spend a second week at No. 2, with Kings of Leon's "Only By The Night" (Hand Me Down/Sony BMG) back up 4-3 and mezzo-soprano Faryl Smith's "Faryl" (UCJ/Universal) 6-4. Take That's "The Circus" (Polydor/Universal) also climbed 9-5 but U2's "No Line on the Horizon" (Mercury/Universal) was down to No. 6 after two weeks at the top.

Bette Midler's "The Best Bette" (Rhino/Warner Music) jumped 21-9 in its 26th chart week, while Lionel Richie's "Just Go" (Mercury/Universal) debuted at No. 10. Meanwhile a "Definitive Collection" by Richie and the Commodores, on Motown/UMTV, raced 36-14. Peter Doherty's solo set "Grace/Wastelands" (Parlophone/EMI) opened at No. 17.

The singles chart, meanwhile, saw Lady GaGa's "Poker Face" (Interscope/Universal) come from behind to claim the crown for the first time. Midweek sales data had Flo Rida heading back to No. 1 with "Right Round" (Atlantic/Warner Music), but GaGa rallied later in the week to climb 4-1. Flo Rida stayed at No. 2 as last week's bestseller, the Comic Relief version of "Islands In The Stream" (Mercury) by TV characters Vanessa Jenkins and Bryn West, fell to No. 3. "Dead & Gone" (Atlantic/Warner Music) by T.I. featuring Justin Timberlake reversed last week's 6-7 fall, "Beautiful" (Universal) by Akon featuring Kardinal Offishall and Colby O'Donis climbed 9-8 and Beyoncé's "Halo" (Columbia/Sony BMG) 20-9.

New in the top 20 were British duo La Roux with "In For The Kill" (Polydor/Universal) at No. 11, the Pet Shop Boys' "Love Etc" (Parlophone/EMI) at No. 14 and the "Slumdog Millionaire" soundtrack single "Jai Ho (You Are My Destiny)" (Interscope/Universal) by A.R.Rahman featuring Pussycat Dolls at No. 20.

"Poker Face" (Interscope/Universal) is in a fourth week at No. 1 on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles, while the U2 album is spending a second week atop European Top 100 Albums.
