Kaki King Sees 'Red' On New Album

Comments

Guitarist Kaki King explores new sonic terrain on her third studio album, "... Until We Felt Red," due Aug. 8 via Velour Recordings. It's the follow-up to 2004's primarily instrumental and acoustic guitar-driven "Legs To Make Us Longer," King's lone release for Epic.

On "Red," King collaborated with producer John McEntire (Tortoise, the Sea & Cake), whose influence is clearly felt on tracks like "Goby," with its lightly plucked electric guitar, vibes and jazzy drum work.

The title cut is awash in atmospherics, evolving from a meandering pedal steel progression into a Tortoise-style explosion of fuzzed tones and clattering drums. Closer "Gay Songs of Lesbian Mothers" sounds unlike anything King has previously recorded, its electronically treated drums and bass as prominent as the main guitar figure.

King also takes the microphone on a number of tunes, including opener "Yellowcake," "Jessica" and the eight-minute "You Don't Have To Be Afraid."

The artist just wrapped a tour of Italy and will begin a string of summer U.S. dates Saturday (May 20) at the Joshua Tree Music Festival in Joshua Tree, Calif.

Here is the track list for "...Until We Felt Red":

"I Never Said I Love You"
