Justin Bieber has only been able to drive for one year, but he already knows the importance of keeping your eyes on the road. The 17-year-old singer wants to protect his millions of fans while they are behind the wheel by encouraging them to put the phone away.

"We need to change the attitudes in our society toward texting and driving and I am making it one of my personal goals to make this happen," said Bieber in a statement.

The pop phenom will partner with PhoneGuard Inc. in a series of promotions discouraging the use of cell phones while driving.

PhoneGuard's Drive Safe software application suite disables texting, emailing and keyboard functions on a mobile phone while in a vehicle moving faster than 10 miles per hour.

"Every night we perform we have a banner that goes up that says 'Don't Text and Drive' so it really means a lot to me," he said.

Bieber's anti-texting while driving campaign will also offer financial support for charities such as the Remember Alex Brown Foundation, organized by the family of teenager Alex Brown, who lost her life to texting while driving.

Drivers may be tempted to text while stuck in horrendous traffic this weekend in Los Angeles. Bieber's announcement comes on the heels of the much-anticipated 405 Freeway closure in Los Angeles, dubbed "Carmageddon," which is expected to cause major delays throughout the city. A 10-mile stretch of the San Diego Freeway will be closed on July 16-18 to demolish the Mulholland Drive bridge.

The Los Angeles Police Department asked several celebrities with major Twitter followings to post about the freeway closure in hopes of getting word out to as many people as possible. Lady Gaga, Ashton Kutcher and Kim Kardashian were all asked to tweet.
