Former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones will release a new album in the U.K. on Feb. 18 and take part in a charity concert in Manchester, England, on Sunday (Jan. 27), both featuring special guests. The album, "The Thunderthief," is due out from Discipline Global Mobile, the label founded by King Crimson's Robert Fripp, who also plays on the album.
Jones plays an extraordinary range of instruments on the set, including tripleneck mandolin, koto, kyma, autoharp, and ukulele. "The Thunderthief" also features Nick Beggs, a former member of 1980s U.K. hitmakers Kajagoogoo, who is also a member of Jones' live band. Jones and company recently completed a brief North American tour co-headlining with King Crimson.
Sunday's concert at the Lyric Theatre at the Lowry in Manchester is a benefit show under the moniker Guitars Against Landmines for the Mines Advisory Group (MAG). The show is being organized by MAG in conjunction with U.S.-born singer/songwriter Julie Felix.
A veteran of the folk circuit, Felix was a familiar figure on British television around the turn of the 1970s, achieving two top-30 hits in 1970 on RAK including a cover of Paul Simon's "If I Could (El Condor Pasa)." Guitars Against Landmines will also feature Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings, Roy Harper, Steve Harley, Kiki Dee and her guitarist/accompanist Carmelo Luggeri, Homelife, and Little Johnny England.
"The Thunderthief" is the follow-up to 1999's "Zooma," which was Jones' first solo album since Led Zeppelin disbanded in the early '80s. The nine-track instrumental set featured appearances by drummer Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello & the Attractions) and guitarists Paul Leary (Butthole Surfers) and Trey Gunn (King Crimson).
In related news, Led Zeppelin has for the first time agreed to license one of its songs for use in a commercial. The song "Rock and Roll," from the band's classic "Led Zeppelin IV" album, will soon begin appearing in TV commercials for various Cadillac models.
