Joel Madden Says Good Charlotte 'Needed a Break' Before 'Cardiology'

Good Charlotte

After breaking out in the early '00s with pop-punk singles like "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" and "The Anthem," Good Charlotte rebooted its career in 2007 with the dance-friendly "Good Morning Revival," which debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and spawned hit single "I Don't Wanna Be In Love (Dance Floor Anthem)." The band already has a successful comeback under its belt, but frontman Joel Madden sees "Cardiology," the band's fifth album out today (Nov. 2), as yet another fresh start.

"It's kind of a reintroduction," Madden tells Billboard.com. "It's not like anything we've ever done, and definitely not a continuation of 'Good Morning Revival,'" though he says that "there are some elements of that record on this record."

The singer says that Good Charlotte "needed to take a break" after the release and subsequent touring behind "Revival." During the downtime, the band left longtime label Epic Records and signed with Capitol for "Cardiology," whose first single, "Like It's Her Birthday," has sold 63,000 downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Meanwhile, Madden and his twin brother, Good Charlotte guitarist Benji Madden, have learned to deal with incessant tabloid rumors: Joel is rumored to be setting a wedding date with girlfriend Nicole Richie, while Benji has been pegged as Christina Aguilera's new beau.

"I don't read any of it," says Madden, "so it's definitely not a part of my daily life. I would choose not to be in them, but it's the world we live in today, so you just have to ignore it."

Although Good Charlotte has yet to announce full tour details, Madden says that the band is heading to Europe before hitting Australia and the U.S. next year. The singer personally can't wait to return to Australia, which he calls "a home away from home" for the band.

"I love Australia. The country is so good to us, they always have been," he says. "They really kind of 'get' us. There's something about our band that's very sarcastic and ironic, and they seem to understand that."
