Jarre Looks To Wind Energy For Live Show

Comments

Keyboardist Jean Michel Jarre is making plans to hold a concert in a Danish wind turbine park with all of the electricity produced by wind energy, his management Cream Creative Management tells Billboard.com. "The concert is supposed to take place at the end of August or early September 2002," says Cream Creative assistant project manager Santine Bionda. "Some of the music will be written for the occasion, and the main theme will be the wind, renewable energy, and the environment."

Jarre was in Denmark last week in connection with a Danish Foreign Ministry image-building conference, as the French musician has a cooperative agreement with Danish electronics manufacturer Bang & Olufsen. "He saw the many wind turbines in Denmark and was inspired by them," Bionda says.

She adds the show will be customized in accord with the chosen site, which is tentatively Gl. Vraa Enge, a windmill park near Aalborg in northern Jutland, the peninsula attached to the Continent.

The primary sponsor, Danish wind turbine producer NEG Micon, says it will be looking for other parties to raise the approximately 3 million euros needed to put on the event. The company is working with the Danish muscular dystrophy foundation on the project.

"[Jarre] contacted us, so together we said, 'let's have a look and see if this will fly,'" says NEG Micon marketing manager Henri Schumann. "He wants to visualize through his artistry the possibilities of sustainable energy as he did with water in previous shows. Now we have to create interest in this project so we can raise the money needed."

The Danish Broadcasting Corporation and French national television have both expressed interest in the project. A live audience of around 50,000 would be able to attend the proposed show, according to preliminary estimates.

Jarre is no stranger to unique venues, having in June played a two-night stand at the Acropolis in Athens. The show was broadcast on French television and radio.
