Indie Vets Team Up In Champions Of Sound

Former Quicksand bassist Sergio Vega, former model Sibyl Buck and former Chamberlain/Split Lip drummer Charlie Walker have teamed up in Champions Of Sound. The New York group, rounded out by keyboardist Lindsay Jones, is selling a four-song EP via its official Web site and is in talks with labels for the release of its debut album.

Champions has just begun playing live in New York, but is eyeing some November shows in Los Angeles with Oslo, a band led by No Doubt keyboardist Gabriel McNair. Walker previously served as the drummer on Oslo's demos and would likely play with both bands during the shows.

Following Quicksand's dissolution, Vega in 2000 released an EP, "The Ray Martin Sessions," via GrapeOS. Walker and Buck (on bass) came into the picture on the subsequent tour in support of it, as did Helmet guitarist Chris Traynor, whom Buck later married.

Champions Of Sound may surprise fans of Vega's work with hardcore mainstay Quicksand, as the group's sound has more in common with the upbeat pop/rock of the Cars and Prince. A new version of "Come Home Soon," first released on "The Ray Martin Sessions," can be sampled on the group's Web site.

As previously reported, Traynor and Walker recently logged studio time with Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale on his Interscope solo debut. Walker is also playing in Bad Moon Music, a new project led by his former Chamberlain bandmate Adam Rubenstein.
