The Pretenders have been relatively active in the past year as a touring act. But beyond a slew of dates opening for the Who in North America this fall, there's no concrete plan for the future of the Chrissie Hynde-led band, whose last studio album was 2002's "Loose Screw."

"Recently, I thought maybe I'd had enough, but I think you go through that periodically, whatever you do," Hynde tells Billboard.com. "I'm not a person who thinks my life is my art. I don't think that at all. I think I'm in a rock band and I'm glad for it and that my life is my life and I offer a little bit of music to the public, but that's all."

She adds, "But I feel that I need to sort of tie some loose ends together and to go out with a good record and everything, so I'm thinking of making a record next year." While Hynde admits she has an album's worth of material in the mix, she's unsure whether to play any of the new tunes on the Pretenders upcoming U.S. dates, which include a few headlining gigs in between Who shows.

"I don't know if we'll do any new songs or not because that kind of takes the element of newness out of them," Hynde says. "These days, all you have to do is walk out on a stage and the next thing you know, it's all over the Internet. And I don't mind people recording it but all I'm saying is, it's kind of like knowing what you're getting for Christmas in April. I just don't want to take the heat out of the project."
