The bill for the Oct. 21 United We Stand - What More Can I Give? benefit in Washington, D.C., continues to evolve. Huey Lewis & the News and Carole King are the latest artists to sign on, while Kiss and Mick Jagger have each pulled out. Also new to the lineup is Janet Jackson, who will provide a video montage created especially for the concert.
Lewis and King join a star-studded lineup that boasts Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, 'N Sync, Destiny's Child, Usher, Rod Stewart, the Backstreet Boys, Ricky Martin, Train, P. Diddy, Goo Goo Dolls, James Brown, Al Green, and Aerosmith.
Kiss, announced as part of the show's initial lineup, will not perform due to lead singer Paul Stanley's impending hip surgery. According to a statement, Stanley postponed the procedure in order to participate in the show, but "it became apparent that increasing pain and the possibility of further damage would not allow him to meet the intense physical demands of a KISS performance."
"Although I know that at this time I cannot deliver what this audience will expect and deserve," Stanley said, "as Americans, and as a band that was born in New York, we stand united with everyone involved in this incredible event."
Jagger, on the other hand, was never committed to the show, according to the event's publicist. A statement notes that Jagger "was approached to perform... but was unfortunately unable to participate due to prior commitments. He had not been confirmed for the event and an announcement was made prematurely." Jagger is, however, confirmed to take part at the Concert for New York on Saturday (Oct. 20) at New York's Madison Square Garden.
In other United We Stand news, the Backstreet Boys will perform twice during the event, according to organizers. Like the other acts on the bill, the boy band will perform a scheduled set, but will also have the honor of opening the show with a performance of the National Anthem.
Proceeds from the sold-out, Clear Channel Entertainment-produced concert will benefit the American Red Cross Liberty Relief Fund, the Salvation Army Relief Fund, and the Pentagon Relief Fund.
