Eminem and hip-hop veterans Rev. Run (Run-D.M.C.) and Doug E. Fresh are among those who will take part in the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network's (HSAN) April 26 Detroit event. Slated to take place at the city's 13,000-capacity Cobo Hall, the free gathering will operate under the theme "Remix: Rebuilding, Refocusing, Reinvesting, Resurgence," and focus on youth empowerment.
A pair of panel discussions will spotlight hip-hop's economic and political impact. Other participants include the members of D12 and Slum Village, Petey Pablo, Shady Records VP/GM Paul Rosenberg, and Def Jam Records president Kevin Liles.
The summit will coincide with the Detroit branch of NAACP's Freedom Weekend. In conjunction with that event, HSAN chairman and founder Russell Simmons will receive the NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award for his work with America's youth during an April 27 dinner at Cobo Hall.
"We believe bringing the absolute largest names in hip-hop culture to the city of Detroit will generate the kind of dialog that creates young entrepreneurs who can rebuild urban communities across America," Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick said in a statement.
"Everybody who's been involved in Detroit hip-hop culture here has spent years trying to bring light to the city the same way Russell worked to bring hip-hop to the attention of the world," Eminem added. "And the same way the Mayor is working to put Detroit back in the spotlight. It's the struggle to be heard and to be recognized. It's our time, both hip-hop's and Detroit's."
Tickets, which are available on a first come-first served basis, are being distributed through a partnership with radio outlet WJLB. Information and tickets can be obtained by visiting the station's Web site or by calling 313-438-1129.
Among other related events is the Detroit Hip-Hop Summit Showcase featuring Def Jam Vendetta Tour artists Cam'ron and the Diplomats, Method Man, Redman, Keith Murray, and Capone & Noreaga, as well as the D.O.C. and King Gordy. Tickets for the show at the State Theater will be $35 and go on sale tomorrow (April 17) via Ticketmaster. Separately, a hip-hop poetry slam will take place at the city's St. Andrews Hall, and WJLB will host an all-ages poetry slam and rap battle at the Shelter.
