Harris Takes Landmine Concerts To Europe

Comments

Emmylou Harris, one of the most determined public voices in favor of a ban on landmines, is heading to Europe in January for six Concerts for a Landmine Free World, sharing the stage on various dates with Steve Earle, Nanci Griffith, Elvis Costello, and John Prine. The European leg of the tour follows a previously announced U.S. series of concerts, beginning Dec. 2 in Chicago and likely to feature Earle, Griffith, Prine, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Bruce Cockburn. Two earlier U.S. shows were postponed after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The European dates begin Jan. 13 in Belfast, Ireland, and close Jan. 20 in Oslo. Harris, Earle, and Griffith are the only artists to participate in all concerts. Prine will join on all dates except in Dublin (Jan. 14) and Belfast, while Costello is confirmed for the four dates excluding Oslo and Stockholm (Jan. 19). Proceeds from the shows will be benefit the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation's (VVAF).

The tour comes more than four years after Harris' live performance at the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize concert in Oslo, in honor of that year's laureates, the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) and its founder, Jody Williams.

As previously reported, Harris will join several of the artists who contributed to the soundtrack to the Coen Brothers film "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" -- including Alison Krauss and Union Station and Ralph Stanley -- for the Down From the Mountain tour, which kicks off Jan. 25 in Lexington, Ky.
