Lady Gaga

L ady Gaga was the victim of a hyper-targeted attack on Twitter and Facebook on Monday, with her millions of "monsters" being solicited to provide personal details in exchange for a free iPad. The hacker or hackers first tried to dupe many of her 45 million Facebook fans with a seemingly unbelievable pitch.

"Lady Gaga's new iPad comes out in 3 days!" a message on Facebook read. "So for the next 72 hours we will be hosting a massive giveaway to all the Mother Monster fans. Sign up and receive your special Lady Gaga edition iPad in time for the Holidays! For contest rules and registration visit the link below."

On Twitter, someone purporting to be Gaga herself wrote, "Monsters, I'm giving away FREE ipad2's to each one of you in the spirit of the holidays :)"

According to BBC News, the attached links directed more than 100,000 of her followers to a website that requested personal details in a potential phishing scam.

Later Monday, Gaga took to Twitter to announce the hacking was over and that she was heading to Japan to spend time with her "TokyoMonsters." A few fans took the no-iPad news badly. "so....no new laptop then? Bummer" wrote a fan named Jessica (@yayponies) on Twitter.
