Guitar Gods Satriani, Vai Team For Tour

Electric guitar stars Joe Satriani and Steve Vai are presenting a new incarnation of Satriani's G3 tour this summer, also featuring John Petrucci (Dream Theater). The tour kicks off June 23 in Reno, Nev., and will include 24 dates across North America before winding down July 21 in Sunrise, Fla.

The tour format will feature the three guitarists playing short sets with their own bands, then all joining together for a final set backed by Satriani bassist Stu Hamm and drummer Jeff Campitelli. Vai's backing band will include Virgil Donati on drums and bassist Billy Sheehan, who hasn't toured with Vai since the two were part of David Lee Roth's backing band in the late '80s.

Both Vai and Satriani will be supporting new double-CD live releases. Satriani's "Live in San Francisco" and Vai's "Alive in an Ultra World" are both due June 19 from Epic.

Satriani's latest studio effort, "Engines of Creation" (Epic), peaked at No. 12 on The Billboard 200 albums chart in April. A live disc from a previous G3 tour, "G3 - Live in Concert," entered The Billboard 200 at No. 108 in June 1997.
