Guests Abound On Composer Armstrong's Second Solo Set

Film composer Craig Armstrong will release his second solo album, "As If To Nothing," April 16 via the Astralwerks-distributed Melankolic label. The set features an impressive group of collaborators, including U2 lead singer Bono, former Lemonheads leader Evan Dando, electronic artist Photek, and vocalist David McAlmont.

Although he has done arrangements for the likes of Madonna and U2, and produced the Pet Shop Boys and the Spice Girls' Melanie C, the Scottish-bred Armstrong is best known as a film composer. He recently won a Golden Globe award for his score to Baz Luhrmann's lavish musical "Moulin Rouge." He also won the 1998 Ivor Novello award for his score to Luhrmann's "Romeo & Juliet," and has contributed music to the films "Cruel Intentions" and "Plunkett and Macleane," the debut film by Jake Scott, son of storied director Ridley Scott.

In November, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra premiered Armstrong's concert work, "When Morning Turns To Light."

His work with Massive Attack on the 1994 remix album "No Protection" led to a deal with the group's Melankolic label. His debut, 1998's "The Space Between Us," featured such guests as the Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser and the Blue Nile's Paul Buchanan.

"I'd say that album functions as a series of snapshots of who I was and what I'd been doing up until then," Armstrong says of the set. "I'm still very fond of it, but this new record is something very different. The challenge with each new piece of work is to move forward, do something different and, hopefully, something better."
