Green Day
U.S. stars took over the U.K. sales charts yesterday (Sunday) as Green Day's "21st Century Breakdown" (Reprise/Warner Music) debuted at No. 1 on the album chart and Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" (Interscope/Universal) opened atop the singles survey.
"21st Century Breakdown," Green Day's second U.K. No. 1 album, hit the top after just two days on release. It's one of only four albums in the last five years to debut at the peak after a Friday release date, according to the Official Charts Company. The most recent was Metallica's "Death Magnetic" last year, and Eminem has achieved the feat twice, with "Curtain Call – The Hits" in 2005 and "Encore" (2004).
Lily Allen's "It's Not Me It's You" (Regal/Parlophone/EMI) climbed again 3-2, as its current single "Not Fair" rose 8-5. Another former No. 1, the Prodigy's "Invaders Must Die" (Takemetothehospital), climbed back 6-4 as its single "Warrior Dance" improved 13-9, and previous hit "Omen" revived 40-30. North of England rock band Maximo Park debuted at No. 6 with their third album "Quicken The Heart" (Warp) as Bob Dylan's "Together Through Life" (Columbia/Sony) crashed to No. 8 after two weeks on top. Sony Music's new "The Very Best of Jim Reeves" collection opened at No. 9, the late country legend's first time in the U.K. top ten since "The Definitive Jim Reeves" climbed to No. 9 in August 1992.
Black Eyed Peas have topped the U.K. singles chart once before, when "Where Is The Love" spent its first six weeks on the chart at the summit in 2003. "Number 1" (4th & Broadway/Universal Island) by Tinchy Stryder featuring N-Dubz thus moved down to No. 2 after three weeks on top, and La Roux's "In For The Kill" (Polydor/Universal) to No. 3 after four weeks at No. 2. Eminem's "We Made You" (Interscope/Universal) climbed 7-4.
In the top 20, there were climbs for Alesha Dixon's "Let's Get Excited" (Asylum/Warner Music), 25-13; Deadmau5 & Kaskade's "I Remember" (Virgin/EMI), 19-14; and "Kiss Me Thru The Phone" (Interscope/Universal) by Soulja Boy featuring Sammie, 30-16.
On Billboard's European Top 100 Albums, "Sounds of the Universe" (Mute/EMI) is in a third week at No. 1 for Depeche Mode, while Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" (Interscope/Universal) spends a 12th week atop Eurochart Hot 100 Singles.
