Grateful Dead Lives Again On 12-CD Box Set

Comments

As tipped here in June, the Grateful Dead's studio work will be honored by Rhino/Warner Archive on Oct. 16, with the release of "Grateful Dead: The Golden Road (1965-1973)." The 12-CD boxed set will include more than 15 hours of music, including 10 of the group's studio albums each filled out with bonus tracks and rarities. Two discs of rare early Dead tracks from when the band was known as the Warlocks and the Emergency Crew are also featured.

"The Dead have been lionized for their incredible live performances and vilified for their studio work," set co-producer/Rhino senior director of A&R James Austin said in a statement. "But in the studio these guys were also gifted and more competent than anyone really knew."

The boxed set includes the Warner Bros. albums "The Grateful Dead" (the group's debut), "Anthem of the Sun," "American Beauty," "Workingman's Dead," "History of the Grateful Dead, Volume One (Bear's Choice)," "Grateful Dead (Skull & Roses)," "Live/Dead," "Aoxomoxoa," and "Europe '72."

The outtakes section will include alternate mixes and extended versions of songs that appeared on these albums, as well as studio jams that eventually evolved into some of the group's more well-known tunes.

Each CD in the set will include full artwork and a 16-page booklet with new essays by longtime publicist Dennis McNally and such prominent fans such as Gary Lambert, Lenny Kaye, and Owsley Stanley. A separate 80-page book offers photos, a band history, and a complete discography.

In other Dead news, Arista/Grateful Dead Records will on Tuesday (Sept. 25) release "Nightfall of Diamonds," a two-CD live set from the Grateful Dead vault. "Nightfall" was recorded at the Meadowlands (now Continental Airlines Arena) in East Rutherford, N.J., on Oct. 16, 1989.
