Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" (Warner Bros.) began an eighth week at No. 1 on the U.K. singles chart yesterday (May 21) to become the longest-running chart-topper since Wet Wet Wet's "Love Is All Around" spent 15 weeks at the peak between June and September 1994. The new album chart saw labelmate Red Hot Chili Peppers start a second week at No. 1 with "Stadium Arcadium," seeing off the challenge of new entries by the Raconteurs and Feeder.
The Gnarls Barkley single goes from strength to strength, now overtaking two hits with which it had shared seven weeks at No. 1: the Spice Girls' 1996 debut hit "Wannabe" and Tony Christie's 2005 reissue of "(Is This the Way To) Amarillo."
Danish duo Infernal's durable "From Paris to Berlin" climbs again to a new peak, and now has a six-week chart history of 34-4-3-4-3-2. Meanwhile, Universal's Def Jam label has two top five hits, with "Control Myself" by LL Cool J featuring Jennifer Lopez down 2-3 and "Say I" by Christina Milian and Young Jeezy up 18-4 after its first week of physical sales.
Another track now adding physical sales to downloads, Busta Rhymes' "Touch It" (Interscope) vaulted 23-6, 10 years almost to the week since he hit No. 8 with his debut U.K. solo hit "Woo-Hah! Got You All in Check." The new hit is his eighth top 10 singles chart appearance, including various guest spots.
"First Time" (Manifesto) by Swedish dance duo Sunblock featuring Robin Beck climbs 48-9 in its first week at traditional retail. The track is a new version of American singer Beck's 1988 U.K. No. 1 "The First Time," for which she recorded new vocals. Orson's "No Tomorrow" (Mercury), which opened at No. 28 on downloads last week, climbed to No. 11 after its physical release.
"Teenage Life" (Ebul/Jive) by Daz Sampson climbs 13-12, but was an also-ran at Saturday's Eurovision Song Contest in Athens, at which it was the British entry, finishing 19th out of 24. The winner was "Hard Rock Hallelujah" by Lordi, a Finnish metal band in monster costumes.
On the albm chart, "Arcadium" held on to the top spot despite strong new entries from Jack White's Raconteurs at No. 2 with "Broken Toy Soldiers" (XL Recordings) and British rock trio Feeder's "The Singles" (Echo) at No. 3.
