Global Pulse: Techno's Leftfield Returns Centerstage

Fans of critically acclaimed techno act Leftfield will have to wait until July before feasting on the group's as-yet-untitled sophomore album. But punters at London's Scala club will get a taste of what's to come April 9, when band member Paul Daley will air some of the new material in a DJ set.

The band, whose 1996 debut disc "Leftism" (Hard Hands/Columbia) was on the vanguard of the electronica scene, also has a new cut, "Swords," included on the soundtrack to the Columbia TriStar picture "Go." The album will be released in most worldwide markets in April; Sony issued it in the yesterday in the U.S.

The first single from the new Leftfield set will be "Afrika (Shox)," which will feature electro pioneer Afrika Bambaataa. The track is likely to street in the U.K. in June

Aside from "Leftism," Leftfield is best known for its 1993 song "Open Up," which featured the abrasive voice of former PIL and Sex Pistols front man John Lydon. That song's refrain -- "Burn, Hollywood, Burn" -- became prophetic later that year, when parts of the California coast were engulfed by forest fires.

Leftfield single "Original," released in 1995 and featuring the voice of Curve's Toni Halliday, was a top 20 hit in Britain, as was 1996's "Release The Pressure.
