Antonio Romero and Rafael Ruiz each received a plaque from the Spanish society of authors and publishers Monday for their 30 years in show business. In that time, they've had 35 albums, 300 registered songs -- and the most successful Latino single ever.
On the same day, Zafiro Records launched the duo's new album, "Baila," with the single. "If it takes off here, then it'll be another summer of nonstop dancing," joked Romero, author of seven of the album's 10 songs.
Zafiro director Blanca Salcero says international launch plans depend on how the single and album fare in Spain, adding, "We are confident the single will take the dance scene by storm, and we're ready to do remixes on 'Baila Baila' to produce a 'Macarena' effect." The "Macarena" remix by the Bayside Boys sold 11 million units and was No. 1 for 14 consecutive weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. More than 1,000 compilation albums include versions of the song.
