Global Pulse: John Barry To Preview New Project

John Barry will make three rare appearances in the U.K. this month to promote his forthcoming Decca album, "Playing By Heart," due for release this spring. The revered British film composer will premiere the set with performances April 21 at Birmingham's Symphony Hall and April 23-24 at London's Royal Albert Hall.

While the album shares the name of a Miramax movie featuring Sean Connery and Gena Rowlands, it is not the soundtrack from that film. The jazz-inflected set will feature trumpeter Chris Botti, as well as original masters of deceased horn man Chet Baker, whom Barry cites as a major influence.

"Playing By Heart" is only Barry's second non-soundtrack release in 26 years: The first was "The Beyondness Of Things" in 1973. A third non-soundtrack album, a Celtic-influenced project, could see the light of day early next year.

Barry's move away from film work marks his return to his origins. Prior to scoring movies, TV programs, and ads, he earned his living as a musician.

Barry's scores have experienced renewed popularity in the U.K., as the market for '70s nostalgia grows and electronic artists continue to sample his lush, orchestral productions, thus rekindling interest in his originals.
