'Glee,' 'American Idol' Score Major Emmy Nominations

"Glee" and "American Idol" led the Emmy nods for music-based programming when the nominations for the television awards were announced Thursday morning (July 14) in North Hollywood.

 

"Glee's" second season was honored with 12 nominations, including Best Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Chris Colfer, and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Jane Lynch, who will host the live ceremony on Sept. 18. Last year, "Glee" earned 19 Emmy nominations.

Meanwhile, "American Idol's" season 10 shakeup was deemed an Emmy success, as the show's 10 nominations led the pack for reality shows. The show will compete in the Outstanding Reality - Competition Series category, and host Ryan Seacrest is in the running for Outstanding Host in the reality genre.

 

Other musical TV shows honored with Emmy nods included "Saturday Night Live," with 16 nominations; "So You Think You Can Dance," with eight nominations; and "The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards," with five nominations. "Lady Gaga Presents The Monster Ball Tour: At Madison Square Garden," the pop star's HBO concert special which premiered in May, picked up five nominations.
