Nelly Furtado scored her first U.K. No. 1 single yesterday (June 11) as "Maneater," from her third Geffen album "Loose," climbed from No. 8, where it debuted last week on download sales. But the Scottish singer/songwriter that she replaced at the summit, Sandi Thom, followed her bestseller "I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair)" (RCA) with a No. 1 album, as "Smile ... It Confuses People" opened in pole position.
The top five of the album chart were all new entries, with Thom leading British rock act the Feeling's debut set "Twelve Stops and Home" (Universal Island) at No. 2, Ronan Keating's "Bring You Home" (Polydor) at No. 3, Paul Simon's "Surprise" (Warner Bros.) at No. 4 and Primal Scream's "Riot City Blues" (Columbia) at No. 5.
Keating's new entry is his third solo studio album to reach the top 10, easily outdoing the No. 21 peak of 2003's "Turn It On" (after which his "10 Years Of Hits" was an October 2004 chart-topper). Simon and Primal Scream also improve on their last showings with studio releases. Simon peaked at No. 20 in 2000 with "You're the One" while Primal Scream topped out at No. 9 with 2002's "Evil Heat."
The singles chart features a strong football flavor, following the start of the 2006 FIFA World Cup last Friday. Embrace's official anthem of the England team, "World at Your Feet" (Independiente), races 38-3 after its initial entry on download sales last week.
There are no fewer than eight soccer novelties in the top 40 and three in the top ten. Tony Christie's "(Is This The Way To) the World Cup" (Tug) climbs 11-8, while the perennial "3 Lions" (Epic) by comics David Baddiel and Frank Skinner with the Lightning Seeds soars 48-10. On the European Top 100 Albums chart, Red Hot Chili Peppers are in a fourth week at No. 1 with "Stadium Arcadium" (Warner Bros.) after the double CD maintained its lead in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Holland, Ireland and Greece. "Hips Don't Lie" (Epic) by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean regains its crown on the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles tally, moving back 2-1.
