Fountains Of Wayne Get Busy On Third Album

Modern rock duo Fountains Of Wayne has recorded 15 new songs for the follow up to 1999's "Utopia Parkway" (Atlantic). Chris Collingwood and Adam Schlesinger recently wrapped a two week studio stint at New York's Stratosphere Sound, which Schlesinger co-runs with his Ivy bandmate Andy Chase and former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha. Song titles include "Valley Winter Song," "Elevator Up," "Mexican Wine," "Hackensack," and "Hey Julie," according to the group's official Web site.

Additional sessions in Boston are on tap for next month, coinciding with a March 26 acoustic show in Cambridge, Mass., as part of the "Earfull" series, which features musicians and writers together. The group has parted company with Atlantic; it's not yet clear what label will release the fruits of the recent sessions.

In other Fountains Of Wayne news, the group has recorded the theme song for a new, upcoming show on Comedy Central called "Crank Yankers." Set for a June debut, the program was created by Jimmy Kimmel and Adam Corrolla, the pair behind the cable channel's "The Man Show."

As Schlesinger told Billboard.com last summer, the group was recruited to voice animated characters on a new, as-yet-unnamed cartoon series hatched by Time columnist Joel Stein and in development at VH1. Should the show make it past the pilot stage, Fountains Of Wayne will provide the theme song and several song snippets per episode, which will appear as mini-videos within the show.

Look for the group's cover of the Kinks' "Better Things" on "This Is Where I Belong: The Songs of Ray Davies & the Kinks," due April 2 from Rykodisc.
