Foos, QOTSA, Wilco Lead Big Day Out

Foo Fighters, Queens Of The Stone Age, Wilco, and Deftones lead the powerhouse lineup for the 2003 Big Day Out tour of Australia and New Zealand, which will run for six dates beginning Jan. 17 in Auckland. Other artists confirmed for the shows include PJ Harvey, the Music, legendary German electronic act Kraftwerk, Luke Slater, Chicks On Speed, and Millencolin.

A host of native talent will be on hand for the 11th annual series, including red-hot export the Vines, the Living End, Pacifier, Rocket Science, 28 Days, Frenzal Rhomb, Bexta, the Hard Ons, 1200 Techniques, and Resin Dogs.

PJ Harvey frontwoman Polly Jean Harvey says she is assembling a band especially for Big Day Out, which will be her first performances in more than a year. Deftones are expected to unveil material from their long-awaited, as-yet-untitled next Maverick album, for which a release date has not yet been scheduled. Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl toured as the drummer for Queens Of The Stone Age earlier this year, but the latter act has drafted Joey Castillo (Danzig) to drum for its latest round of touring.

The 2001 edition of Big Day Out was marred by tragedy when a 15-year-old girl died after injuries suffered in a crowd surge during Limp Bizkit's set. During subsequent inquest hearings, the band and members of its organization claimed promoters failed to control the crowd and "just stood back and did nothing" when up to 50 people collapsed yards from the stage.

Last year's shows went off without incident and featured System Of A Down, Alien Ant Farm, Silverchair, Garbage, New Order, Prodigy, the Crystal Method, Jurassic 5, Amen, Faithless, Grinspoon, NOFX, Tomahawk, and the Tea Party.

Here are the Big Day Out tour dates:

Jan. 17: Auckland (Ericsson Stadium)
Jan. 19: Gold Coast, Australia (Parklands)
Jan. 25: Sydney (Showground)
Jan. 27: Melbourne (RAS Showgrounds)
Jan. 31: Adelaide, Australia (RAS Showgrounds)
Feb. 2: Perth, Australia (Claremont Showgrounds)
