Exclusive: Kanye, Tribe To Rock Bumbershoot

Comments

Kanye West, A Tribe Called Quest, AFI, Hawthorne Heights and Yellowcard are among the first acts confirmed for the 2006 edition of Bumbershoot: Seattle's Music & Arts Festival, Billboard.com can reveal. The event will be held Sept. 2-4 throughout the Seattle Center and will also feature performances by Atmosphere, Feist, Shooter Jennings, the English Beat, Deerhoof, Mates Of State and Metric.

This year, Bumbershoot will run from Saturday through Monday, in contrast to prior editions that kicked off on a Friday. "This enabled us to take the resources from Friday and put them into the rest of the festival, and we were able to buy some different acts we hadn't been able to book before," Bumbershoot artistic director Michele Scoleri tells Billboard.com.

As usual, Bumbershoot will also boast a wide array of non-musical activities, including a Flat Track Derby Invitational at KeyArena, the Flatstock poster art fair, two comedy stages (up from a single stage last year), readings from authors such as Greil Marcus and Mary Gaitskill and the 1 Reel Film Festival, to be curated for the first time by the Seattle International Film Festival.

"We're committed to the arts on the whole," Scoleri says of Bumbershoo's varied offerings. "Also, our festival takes place on an extremely unique campus. Other festivals can be out in the middle of a field or a racetrack. The campus of Seattle Center is such a unique place thanks to all of the fantastic venues. Those spaces allow us to keep our commitment to the arts and present them in a way that's unique and exciting."

Tickets go on sale July 15 via Bumbershoot.org and Ticketmaster. "A Bumbershoot day pass gets you access to 20 music and arts venues a day, and usually costs about half the price of an average concert ticket," Scoleri says.
