Ardent Record Store Day supporters the Flaming Lips have started to plan next year's release.
Wayne Coyne says he intends to create a compilation of tracks the Lips have done with other artists such as Neon Indian, Lightning Bolt and Prefuse 73. Flaming Lips have collaborations in the works with Death Cab for Cutie, Ghostland Observatory, Cloudland Canyon and Nick Cave; they are looking to work with Ke$ha and Lykke Li, as well.
"I am bound to the agreements we have with the other artists because we're doing all of this as limited editions," Coyne told Billboard.com. "They're trusting us not just to sound cool but handle the music with special care."
This year, the Flaming Lips have release EPs with Prefuse 73, Neon Indian and Lighting Bolt and have three songs recorded with Cave. All of the releases have been extremely limited editions.
Later in the year, most likely in October, a second compilation of the collaborations will be released, Coyne says.
For previous Record Store Day celebrations, the Flaming Lips have released their version of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" and a box set of vinyl copies of their early Warner Bros. albums.
The Lips are scheduled to enter the studio on Oct. 12 to start recording a 24-hour song, a project that grew out of the band's six-hour song, "Found a Star on the Ground," that the Lips are releasing on a USB drive within a Strobo Trip light and audio phase illusion toy. It retails for $100 with some proceeds from presales benefitting the Central Oklahoma Humane Society and the Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma.
