Her Virgin release "What Took You So Long" started a second week at the top, nicely timed for the release today of her debut solo album, "A Girl Like Me."
On the album chart, Welsh rockers Stereophonics repeated the No. 1 debut of their 1999 sophomore release "Performance and Cocktails," with the V2 follow-up "Just Enough Education to Perform."
But the new entry that took observers by surprise was "This is the Moment," the Decca Broadway release by former teen idol Donny Osmond, which after extensive U.K. promotion arrived at No. 10. That's not only his first appearance on either of the U.K's main sales charts since 1991, but also his first solo top-10 album since "A Time for Us," around Christmas 1973.
Back among the singles, two more female chart heavyweights had to be content with top-5 entries. Bunton's Virgin labelmate Janet Jackson, already No. 10 on Music & Media's Eurochart Hot 100 Singles tally with "All for You," saw the track debut in the U.K. at No. 3. Gabrielle's Go Beat/Polydor release "Out of Reach," the theme song from the new movie version of "Bridget Jones's Diary," arrived at No. 4.
Robbie Williams' latest Chrysalis release, "Let Love be Your Energy," entered at No. 10, a relatively low ranking for the former Take That superstar, especially given his high promotional profile in its week of release. But there was good news for two hot, creatively diverse U.S. acts, as Faith Hill came in at No. 15 with "The Way You Love Me" thanks to a Love To Infinity remix for the U.K. market. Modern rock act Linkin Park made the top-20 for the first time with "Crawling" at No. 16.
Around Europe, Shaggy's "It Wasn't Me" (MCA) single spends a fourth week at No. 1 on the Eurochart. Dido makes it nine atop the European Top 100 Albums chart with "No Angel" (Cheeky/Arista), although she's now pursued by a pack of new entries. Leading those are German industrial rock giants Rammstein with "Mutter" (Motor/Universal) at No. 2.
Also deubting in the top-10 are Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band's "Live In New York City" (Columbia) at No. 3 and the Bee Gees' latest Polydor album "This is Where I Came In" at No. 4. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds arrive at No. 5 with the Mute release "No More Shall we Part," followed by Swedish chart evergreens Roxette at No. 6 with "Room Service" (EMI).
