Rap artists celebrated a stellar sales week on Sunday's new U.K. sales charts, with Dizzee Rascal and Armand Van Helden's "Bonkers" (Dirtee Stank) new at the top of the singles survey, and Eminem's "Relapse" (Interscope/Universal) powering straight to No. 1 on the album bestsellers.
"Bonkers," by the London rapper and featuring New York DJ Van Helden, is Rascal's second consecutive U.K. chart-topper, after "Dance Wiv Me," his collaboration with Calvin Harris, hit the summit last summer. The new hit pushes Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" (Interscope/Universal) down to No. 2 after its own debut at the peak last week.
Australian vocalist Daniel Merriweather's "Red" (J/Sony Music Entertainment) debuted at No. 5 to become his second U.K. top ten single of the year, after February's No. 8 featuring Wale, "Change." Soulja Boy's "Kiss Me Thru The Phone" (Interscope/Universal), which features Sammie, climbed 16-8 on the new survey, and 23-year-old Norwegian artist Alexander Rybak debuted at No. 10 with "Fairytale" (EMI), with which he won the Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow May 16. Scottish songsmith Paolo Nutini's "Candy" (Atlantic/Warner Music), the first single from his sophomore album "Sunny Side Up" (out in the U.K. June 1), came in at No. 19.
The Eminem album is his fifth in a row to top the U.K. chart, a run dating back to "The Marshall Mathers LP" in 2000. From the new release, "We Made You" held at No. 4 yesterday while "Beautiful" slipped 38-39. Green Day's "21st Century Breakdown" (Reprise/Warner Music) fell 1-2 on the new chart, as Manic Street Preachers arrived at No. 3 with "Journal For Plague Lovers" (Columbia/Sony Music Entertainment).
Pop veterans Madness made an impressive No. 5 start with their new album "The Liberty of Norton Folgate" (Lucky 7), the highest debut for a studio release by the "Nutty Boys" since "Madness 7" took the same bow in 1981. It's their eighth U.K. top ten album in total. U.S. jazz chanteuse Melody Gardot's "My One and Only Thrill" (Verve/Universal), which debuted at No. 40 in late March, jumped back into the chart at No. 12.
On Billboard's composite European charts, Depeche Mode's "Sounds of the Universe" (Mute/EMI) fended off the challenge of the Green Day set to score a fourth week at the European Top 100 Albums summit. Lady GaGa is in an epic 13th week at No. 1 on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles with "Poker Face" (Interscope/Universal).
