Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott will be among those honored by the Recording Academy/NARAS at the organization's Heroes Awards next week in Washington, D.C. The hip-hop star will be feted along with Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah), Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Michigan), and Washington, D.C.'s Duke Ellington School Of The Arts.
To be held Wednesday (March 21) at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in the nation's capitol, the event will be hosted by actor/comedian Dave Chappelle, and feature guests from the music community as well as members of Congress.
Hosted by the Recording Academy's D.C. chapter, the Heroes Awards dinner and silent auction of music memorabilia will benefit MusiCares, the musicians' health and human services charity, and the Academy's professional education events in the region.
In other news, the Recording Academy-established Grammy foundation will benefit from an upcoming sale of memorabilia and collectibles on home shopping channel QVC. Broadcasting from Seattle's Experience Music Project, the foundation's Art Of Music program will make available music-related art from Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Grace Slick, Gene Simmons, the Grateful Dead and more.
The two-hour televised event, set for April 2 at 9 p.m. ET, will include guest appearances by Jefferson Airplane/Starship's Grace Slick and the Dead's Mickey Hart, as well as official Grammy graphic artists Rick Garcia and Romero Britto.
Among the items available for purchase are one-of-a-kind Gibson acoustic guitar that Hendrix equipped with a special metal bridge to withstand his aggressive playing style. To settle a debt, the guitarist later parted company with the instrument, which today is valued at more than $75,000.
Other items include the original cover art from the Grateful Dead's "Workingman's Dead," limited edition lithographs by Lennon, limited edition art by Simmons, and limited edition posters by U2 lead singer Bono.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale will benefit the Grammy Foundation and its music education efforts.
